How to Regrip a Longboard (Loaded Dervish Edition)

I decided I wanted to regrip my loaded dervish longboard because I wanted to be unique. The loaded spray on grip still had lots of life in it but I needed to redirect my stoke someway constructive over my winter break. Here is a step by step tutorial on what I did.
- First figure out the length and width of your longboard. The loaded dervish is 41.5'' long and 8.5'' wide.
- Create a photoshop document with these dimensions. 41.5'' and 8.5'' was what I used.
- You can pull an image of your longboard from the internet and use "CTRL + T" to transform and resize the longboard to the size of your document.
- Then create the design you want on top of this layer.
- Here is the final photoshop file that I created for my loaded dervish with the custom design I want on my longboard: DOWNLOAD
- Save the photoshop file as an image: DOWNLOAD
- Then convert the image into a PDF file so you can print it: DOWNLOAD
- When you print, hit tile all pages so it does not scale your image to one page.
- Once everything is printed cut out the white border and match it up to your longboard to see if everything fits right.

- Cut out your design. Use an exacto knife on the fine details.

- Flip your design backwards (if you don't, your design will be reversed when cut out) and trace the stencil on the back of your grip tape. I am using Paradox Grip from MuirSkate.com

- I used a sharpie to just trace the outline roughly. The highlighter signifies the sides of the design that will touch an edge of my longboard.
- Remember to leave extra room on the borders of the design that will hug the edge of your board. Later, we will file it down to create a very clean border on the actual board.
- Cut out the design using sharp scissors and exacto knives for detail. Again, REMEMBER to leave room for the EDGE sides.

- Cut out all your pieces and again overlay it on your board to make sure you like the design.

- Now it is time to remove the old grip or spray-on grip from the longboard. I used the scrap pieces of the Paradox Grip tape as well as some smoother sand paper I bought at Home Depot.
- First take your design and trace it onto your board with a pencil.

- Try to remove the grip only in the area you want to apply the design.
- Take the scrap grip tape and rub it until the spray-on grip is gone. Finish off with the sand paper to give a smoother feel.

- Blow off the dust and wipe it with a damp paper towel (just a TINY bit of water) to remove any lingering saw dust that may reduce the stickiness of the back of the grip tape.
- Once the surface is ready, apply the grip tape design.

- For the designs that touch the edge of the longboard, we will need a nail filer.
- Simply use long smooth strokes to file the edge of the board to remove the excess grip tape for a nice clean look.

- Do this for the rest of your design pieces.

- Once everything is complete, clean up and enjoy the beautiful new grip job!

- Optional Steps... Gripping your truck!
- I decided that gripping my paris trucks would help me better be able to perform manuals. The process is the same as gripping the board.
- I overlay-ed grip tape on the truck, I filed the sides down with my nail filer and then I poked holes from the back with a sharp tool so my nails could fit in.

- I finished by filing the inside ellipse down using the methods I talk about above.

Awesome man. I really like the feel of grip tape rather than spray on grip. Plus a personalized board makes it so much more fun

It’s pretty cheap. Just buy enough feet to cover your entire board. You’ll have lots of extra but you can use it for something else later.

No idea, you might have to buy this. I’m guessing people use some sort of fine sand type material?

What are the measurements for the dervish across the trucks. I am trying to cut out my own long board but that is the last part and I’m not sure the measurements for the curvature to the nose.

Not sure sorry, I’m won’t be home for 2 months and don’t have any tape measure with me in Virginia.

I figured it out. I just printed your photo. It was a big help! I just need the tan tien shape in the exact measurements.. I’m making two of my own boards based on the loaded ones, only with slight variations with the nose/tail..
